SSLC Variance Considerations
Possible Variances Required for the
 South Sound Logistics Center (SSLC)

The Port of Tacoma would need at least 2 variances to allow a distribution facility to locate in a Rural Resource Industrial (RRI) zone 2.5 miles from the Interstate rather than the 0.5 miles required by the County Code.

A variance would also be required to add any additional footage to the maximum building height of 40 feet if large storage areas were erected.

These would be determined by the Thurston County Examiner’s Office, and the ruling could be appealed to the Thurston County Commissioners.

Also, the usage of the property may come into question for warehousing and rail activities in an Rural Resource Industrial (RRI) zoning designation.

Other proposed uses for the Logistics Center would likely require a full zoning change to non-rural light or heavy industrial.
